Differences between IP1202/IP1203 and IP1202e/IP1203e

An IP1202e/IP1203e with external antenna connectors provides the possibility to use antenna types with radiation patterns and antenna diversity that differs from the internal antennas of IP1202/IP1203. Therefore an IP1202e/IP1203e is equipped with two MCX connectors. Also two omni-directional external antennas with coaxial cables are included.

Refer to the installation plan for default external antennas to mount it on the wall:

The differences in the radiation patterns are compared on the following antenna diagram:

Antenna diversity

In contrast to IP1202/IP1203, where two internal antennas are arranged to achieve horizontal/vertical polarization diversity, the external antennas on IP1202e/IP1203e can be used to provide spatial diversity. E.g. two omni-directional antennas and mount bracket delivered with IP1202e are designed to provide spatial diversity.

Here is visible how the two internal antennas of the IP1202/IP1203, one for vertical and one for horizontal polarisation, are arranged in the base station:

External antenna types

innovaphone provides additional compatible external antennas for IP1202e/IP1203e of 3 different types.

Placement recommendations for external antennas

  • Always use both antenna connectors to maintain the antenna diversity. Using only one antenna connector is not recommended.
  • Both antennas should be of the same type.
  • Always place both antennas to provide the signal to the same area. The second antenna connector is not designed to extend the signal range to other area - e.g. placing first antenna inside of the building and second outside or the first antenna in the one room and the second in the other room is not supported. Directional antennas should be placed to cover the same area too.
  • Use the connector cables of the same length for both antennas. The shorter cables are better - on every meter of the cable you will get 1 dB gain loss.
  • Distance between to antennas should be at least 15 cm. Distance greater that 2 meters are not recommended.

Using attenuators to reduce the output power of the base station

In special cases, like reflective environments, it is recommended to use more base stations with less output power on the antennas. Since it is not possible to reduce the output power of the base station via configuration, an attenuator placed between the base station and the antenna can be used for this purpose. Depending on a particular case and used antennas attenuators with attenuation level 6, 20 or 30 dB could be used.

innovaphone AG does not list any attenuators, but a 3rd party supplier, like HUBER+SUHNER list considerable attenuators and accessories.

DECT base station housings

innovaphone offers additional housings for use of IP1202e/IP1203e with the standard antennas.
