General Information

Introductory Webinar and Audio-Conference Session


The course starts with an English or German webinar and audio-conference session at 10:00 am (all times GMT+1) on the first day . If this is a multi-lingual course, then there will be separate webinar / audio-conference sessions in English and German. The first German session is at 10:00 am, the first English session is at 11:00 am.

Details about the session dial-in can be found in one of the following chapters of this book (Session Dial-In). The first session will
  • introduce the trainers
  • introduce the students
  • introduce the course outline
  • discuss basic usage of the moodle e-learning environment
  • discuss the ways to collaborate with the other students as well as with the trainers
Participation is mandatory for both full and update trainees!

Further sessions will be held upon request only on the remaining days at the same time.

Course Outline


The course is divided into topics. You can find all topics listed on the courses home page. Each topic has a separate section which looks like this:




Some of these topics are mandatory, some are elective, some are optional. Mandatory topics must be done by you in this course. Elective topics must be done too, but you can choose to do them in a later course (e.g. next years update course). Optional topics are entirely optional. You will find clear information regarding this next to the little (Target Audience) icon.

To "do" a topic in this context means that you need to read all of the associated books and also work through all of the the associated lessons so that they are completed in moodle.

Please note that no lesson except the final exam will be graded! The important point is that you complete the lesson, not the grade you earn in the lesson. So please feel free to attempt the topics the way you like and as often as you like. Also, you are actually encouraged to try "wrong" answers, just to see the responses moodle will give in this case. Many helpful tips are shown in response to wrong answers!

Although you will find the result of all lessons in your grade book, only the final exam lesson is relevant for your course result.

All topics may be discussed in the daily sessions. To request a topic to be discussed, please be sure to post your request/question no later than one hour before the regular session time. The daily session will be cancelled if there are no questions posted.

On-line/Off-line Reference Solutions



Most of the topics feature a downloadable Reference Solution. This is accessible as soon as you have completed the respective lesson. It is strictly recommended to work through them afterwords and compare them to your own solutions.

Some more complicated lessons also have an additional on-line reference solution. This should help you understand the book and guide you if you get stuck in the respective lesson. It is accessible from the beginning, so you can examine it while working through the lesson or as a reference while reading the books!

Planning Your Course Schedule

Online trainings need to be planned carefully by the student.

It is essential that you fish-help.png set aside a contiguous time slot of several hours per day so that you can concentrate on the training without being interrupted.

Topics all have a common structure
  • there is a book discussing the theory regarding the topic
  • there is related material to read (usually articles in the inno-wiki). Please note that it is absolutely required to work through this material in addition to books and lessons, as most of the detailed information is found in the wiki only, not in the books or lessons! This is to make sure you always reference the most-up-to-date wiki sources instead of possibly outdated training material copy of such information
  • there is a lesson guiding you through a practical session regarding the topic
It is essential to prepare, request and attend the daily webinar and audio-conference sessions. Each session is intended to discuss issues trainees have. In order to prepare the session well, trainees must post their questions upfront to the Webinar Session Topic Forum.

All sessions (except on day one) are held upon request only! Do not hesitate to post questions and request a session as it will probably be very helpful. However, it is not the sessions purpose to mimic a classroom situation and to have a trainer present the topic. Its purpose is to discuss questions students may have. For this reason, sessions are held upon request only!

Attending the sessions is not mandatory (except for the first one) but recommended.

Understanding the Course Requirements



Some of the topics in the course are mandatory. That is, you must do them (if you haven't done them in a previous course already). Others are elective. That is, you need to do them, but you can decide on your own if you want to do them in this course or in a later course (e.g. next years update course).

Each topic you do is worth a certain number of credits. The exact amount is mentioned in the topics description as shown here:

In any case, you need to do enough topics and thereby earn enough credits to fulfil the courses total credit requirement. The exact amount of credits you need to earn to pass the course is mentioned in the first topic description next to the little (Summary of your Merits) symbol:

Sounds difficult? Don't worry, moodle does the math for you smile
You will find a Merits tab in you profile (available from the sidebar on the left). In this tab, all of the available topics, their potential credits, the credits you already gained and the number of credits still missing to pass the course are listed.

There are of course topics which are more difficult to do and others which are more easy. Of course, the amount of time you will need to complete a topic largely depends on yourself and your experience and former knowledge. However, to help you estimate the time you will need, an average time to complete is given for each topic next to the little (Timing) symbol:

The final exam requires knowledge discussed in various topics. These are not necessarily mandatory topics! Before you plan your course schedule, have a look at the Final Exam Advanced to determine the topics you may want to do in order to prepare for the final exam.

To plan your course schedule, you should thus
  • determine the topics that are relevant to you because they are mandatory or needed to gain credits or are of special interest to you so that you want to work through them voluntarily
  • plan for the sessions that you intend to attend as a result of that
  • plan for sufficient time to
    • work on the lessons discussed in today's session
    • prepare the topic for next days session
  • plan enough time for the final exam. You should plan 2 days for this (best time: on the last 2 days of the course)
Note: You can go through the topics in any sequence as you like, but at the conference call we will discuss the lessons as requested. So even if you do not intend to work on a particular topic on a certain day, it is best to prepare and attend the session anyway.

The training ends after 2 weeks with a final exam (which you need to pass). At this point in time you must have completed your final exam. However, there is a grace period of one extra week where you can still work on the final exam in the event you did not pass in the first try.

But, there is no regular trainer support throughout this week.

When the course is finished, you still have full access to the course material, so you can work through individual topics whenever you like - a week, a month or even a year later!

Session Call-In

Webinars are held as a combined application sharing session with audio-conference. To take part, you need to dial in to both thus.

You will find a link to this book on the sidebar on the left side of the courses home page in the Collaborative Resources section for quick access during the course.

Application Sharing


The application sharing session is implemented using (link_intern.png moodle activity 'GoMeetNow Webinar (Trainee)' (type *) not found).

When you first use this link, you will probably be asked if you want to use Web Access or to install the client. We recommend to install the client. As this may take a while or you may need assistance from your system administrator, it is a good idea to do this well before the first webinar.

Session Agenda

Except for first Monday's conference, all conferences are optional and will take place upon request only. We strongly recommend to participate, but it is at the trainee's discretion. To request a webinar, post your question to discuss in the webinar no later than one hour before the regular session time.

All conferences take place in the morning. Generally, the conferences serve to resolve issues students have posted to the Webinar Session Topic Forum before.

Of course, you can post your question into the respective topic forum at any time. However, many issues are easier to clarify in the conference!

Completing the Course

The course period is 2 weeks. To complete the course successfully, you need to
  • complete all mandatory lessons
  • gain enough credits (as stated in your Merits profile tab)
  • pass the final exam
This must be done by Friday evening, second week!

Practically, we will not look at your submission until Monday morning, so you may choose of course to do some work at the weekend.

If you fail to pass the final exam, you will receive your corrections in a timely manner and you then have the chance to redo it within the 3rd week.

Contacting other Students and the Trainers


The best method to tackle problems during the training is to post articles to the course forums. This is also the way to request a webinar session to discuss a certain topic (use the Webinar Session Topic Forum for this).

There are a total of 2 different types of forums in the course (per topic). The first one is the announcement forum. There is only one of it for both English and German speaking students and it is solely meant for announcements from trainers to students. The second one are the individual topic forums. Each topic has a separate forum to discuss issues related to the topic. Every student can post questions here and of course every student is invited to provide answers!

You are initially subscribed to all forums. You may choose to un-subscribe from forums related to topics you are not interested in, although we recommend to stay subscribed.

Trainers are available Monday to Friday, 9 am - 1 pm and 2 pm - 5 pm.

It is possible to send personal messages to other participants using the community PBX. This is why all students should have myPBX active all the time. See Lesson on Community PBX in the first topic for details about this.
