Howto:Why does Kirk recommend to not use the radio in an IP1200 Master?

Kirk has recommended to not use the DECT radio of an IP1200 when this IP1200 is used as a master in a multi-cell environment. innovaphone does not recommend such restriction. Why is that?

There are 3 issues here

  • In early releases of the IP1200, lost DECT synchronisation would cause the IP1200 to reboot. While this is non-critical for a radio (as the calls are lost anyway once the sync is lost), it is fatal for the master, as this will terminate all calls in the whole DECT system
  • Larger multi-cell systems impose some significant load on the master, as it has to maintain the state of all current calls in the system
  • Supporting Skinny requires extra resources on the master

Issue #1 is solved already, so that loosing sync will not reboot an IP1200 any more. This was the most important rational for Kirks recommendation.

Issue #2 is obviously still valid. We recommend to not use the radio in an IP1200 master if there are 40 or more radios controlled by this master. Of course, the exact number of radios that can be supported heavily depends on the call and usage pattern in the DECT system. So this is just a rule of thumb. To determine if the load is ok, use standard means to obtain the cpu usage of an IP1200 (i.e. use the "mod" / "mod clr" cmd).

Issue #3 is not relevant to innovaphone installations.
